The first of the Australian built Thompson 870's Gypsy, has just been launched with more on the way.

The Ultimate Club Racer is now available in easy to assemble kit format. The T870 while only 8.7m (28’) long, is capable of competing with boats like the Mumm 30 and the cream of Australia's Super 30's.
It also features a fully moulded interior and offers an incredible amount of space in the cabin.

The boat is based on the T850, of which two prototypes were built in New Zealand. One of these boats is based in Auckland, where it has entered 139 races since it was launched in March 2000. Of these it has finished first over the line 89 times and has had 35 seconds. The other T850 which was shipped to the US made its debut at Key West 2001 where it was the smallest boat in its class, PHRF 3, competing against boats like the Henderson 30s and Melges 30s. It ended up finishing third overall. The same boat has had a great season in Seattle, where it is based and recently achieved some very impressive results at the Whidbey Island Race Week where it finished first in its class and was named Runner-Up; Best Overall Performance.

The T870 was designed to make an even more efficient use of space and the result is a very clean and sleek yacht. The boat is designed to be a
one-design boat and is being produced in Australia by Sportboatz P/L . This will ensure a truly international class and great racing.

The boat features slightly higher top sides than the Thompson 850, to give it a greater interior volume, keep the boat much drier and also gives it a slight rating advantage.

The entire package is designed to be easy to transport and help minimise the hassle and expense associated with campaigning the boat in different venues. It has features like a lifting keel, deck stepped mast and an easily removable rudder with carbon fibre tiller that combine to make trailering and launching as effortless as possible.

The T870 is also designed to be easy to sail as its lightweight construction helps to make the boat easy to handle. The perfectly balanced helm gives the skipper plenty of control and the use of a retractable bowsprit, asymmetric spinnakers and non-overlapping jibs makes gibing and tacking a breeze.
A conventional spinnaker pole is now available if IRC is your target racing.

While the cockpit and deck are all business, the cabin offers an incredible amount of space & comfort for a small boat. The use of a moulded interior provides a true monocoque construction that is extremely light and strong while providing a totally functional living space, able to sleep 5 on the bunks. Painstaking attention to detail has gone into keeping the interior of the boat as clean and uncluttered as the cockpit. Electronics can be flush mounted in pillars located centrally on either side of the hull. Options such as teak flooring and a fridge/cooler are available.

Going in and out of the marina, the boat is easily driven by the optional 10hp Tohatsu saildrive with a two-blade geared folding propeller that has been developed by us specifically for the application.

The optional trailer is dual-axle and galvanised with hydraulic brakes. Ramp launching is possible or alternatively the T870 can be launched using a dock crane by attaching to the single lifting point on top of the keel. This means that no matter where you sail from you can be in or out of the water in just minutes.

The T870 is produced to exacting specifications and quality standards by Sportboatz P/L in Australia. Join an exciting new international class that doubles as the ultimate club racer and is an IRC/PHRF rocket with versatility. Get into a T870 today, Sportboatz...... Speed Thrills!
